Testing WriteFreely one two three

Some thoughts on WriteFreely for blogging.

I looked at WriteFreely when I started resurrecting my blog. I decided to go with 11ty at the time, and I think I still will. The primary reasons being that on the one side, I want a simple local store of everything I write, and on the other, I want a lot of control over how it renders. There is good CSS control here, but the functionality is limited.

That said, I think this is a good solution for a lot of people. My main complaint with WriteFreely is how it integrates with the Fediverse. People can subscribe to it just like other accounts, but their replies go to a black hole. The work around is to put your other account in the footer that is included with each post. Then when someone replies, you’ll be copied…so long as they don’t DM or remove it from the account.

It’s not a huge issue. You could always handshare or boost your blogs. And I’m not sure I’m ready for automatically making replies visible as comments anyway (need some spam filters).

Now to go subscribe and boost this and see what happens.
